Trees Falling on Power Lines, Property

The Fire Department is saddled today with calls for downed wires and trees; one such call was on Fairview Avenue.

Sheila and Graham Briggs stood in the hallway of their house at 42 Fairview Ave. this afternoon, looking at the smoke coming from the power lines across their street.

The tree that sat in their front yard split in half, and is now resting on live wires, blocking traffic on the street.

The street did not lose power.

"It smells like Christmas," joked Sheila Briggs, as she warned her husband not to get too close to the live wires.

Minutes earlier, the Fire Department had left the scene; firefighters said they were out straight, going to similar calls for downed lines and trees.

Scanner transmissions reported a tree fell onto a house at 90 Walnut St. just after 1 p.m. There were no injuries and all occupants of the house were reportedly outside.

The Briggs' neighbor, Rob Rafuse, took his daughter, Mackenzie Parmenter, and their goldendoodle, Lily, for a walk to check out the commotion.

"We live three houses down and decided to take the dog for a walk while we could," Rafuse said.
