Needham High Names New Boys Hockey Coach

Jamaica Plain PE teacher named the new head boys ice hockey coach at Needham High School.

 

As the Needham Rockets hockey teams slip on their skates for a new season, they will answer to a new head coach. 

The Needham High School Athletics department announced at the end of last week, Michael Bertoni has been named the new head coach of the hockey team.

Bertoni teaches physical education and health at the Curley School Jamaica Plain. According to a press release from the High School, he played hockey in college at UMass Boston, and is a level four certified coach through USA Hockey. His coaching career began at his alma mater, and continued to a stint in Somervill and Mystic Valley.

The release notes that Mystic Valley Regional Charter's hockey program was only three years old when he brought the team within one game of qualifying for a tournament.

In the release, Bertoni said he is “grateful to have the opportunity to coach Boys Ice Hockey at Needham High School” and “looking forward to the challenges of moving the program forward and competing in the highly respected Bay State Conference”
