Obituary: Bernard D. Lane

Obituary from Eaton Funeral Home:

Bernard D. "Benny" Lane, 86, of Needham, passed away Nov. 1, 2013.

Bernard was born Aug. 11, 1927 and was the son of the late Bernard Sr. and Clarine Lane of Needham. He was married to the late June M. (Moffat) Lane.

Bernard began his career at a young age as a mechanic at Muzi Motors and R.C. Muirhead and later in excavation at Nardone Sand & Gravel. He then enlisted in the Navy, serving as a Seaman 1st Class on the U.S.S. Bennington, and later in the Naval Reserves. Immediately following his commitment to country, Bernard continued his career as a heavy equipment operator, eventually founding his own company, B. D. Lane Backhoe Service.

In 1981, Bernard used his expertise to dig a backyard pool at his Brookside Road home, which has since been enjoyed by his family.

Bernard enjoyed tending to his large garden, mechanical work, welding and his canine companions Kizzy, Jessie and Brooke.

He will be remembered for his quick wit, trademark catchphrases, and his love for a hot, juicy steak (preferably from one of his home-raised Black Angus cattle) and a cold beer.

He leaves his children David D. Lane and wife Carol, Laurie R. Bishop and her husband Brian, Diana K. Hagan and her husband Brian and Carrie S. Scanlan and her husband Fred; his nieces and nephews; and his nine grandchildren Andrew, Daniel, Victoria, Michael, Alana, Leandra, Alexandra, Melanie and Isabella; his friends; and his caregiver Dhafir Johnson.

Interment with military honors took place at Needham Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Benny's name may be made to the Cotting School, 453 Concord Ave, Lexington MA 02421.
