Owen's Poultry Farm in Needham to Close

After 80 years of service, the farmland will be used to build the new Hillside Elementary School.

A popular 10-acre chicken farm in Needham is closing its doors after 80 years of service, according to a Boston Globe report.

Owen’s Poultry Farm, located on Central Avenue, has served as a landmark in the community since in first opened in 1935.

Over the years, the farm sold millions of eggs, chickens and turkeys to area residents.

Farm owner Douglas Owen is selling the property to the town of Needham for $7 million. The town plans to build a school on the land.

Officials voted in favor of the sale after selecting the farm as the new location for the Hillside Elementary School.

“Everything stops in life, except for death and taxes,” Owen told the newspaper.

Owen, now 57, has lived on the farm his entire life.
