Poet laureate's library gifts will soothe the soul (needhamobserver.com) — Needham residents can pick up free, winter-themed “holiday gift poems” at the Needham Free Library, curated by the town’s first poet laureate, Anne Nydam. With six months left in her term, she’s expanding community poetry projects, from a crowd-sourced “Sidewalks of Needham” poem to a planned Rail Trail poetry walk and a call for resident submissions during National Poetry Month.
   

2. Newman playground process anything but child's play (needhamobserver.com) — Newman Elementary’s preschool playground project in Needham has grown from a simple shade structure into a $539,200 full rebuild that still needs $240,400 in funding and multiple town approvals. If completed, the new, ADA-compliant design near the school’s main entrance would offer shaded, safer, and more accessible play space for preschoolers, including many students with disabilities.
   

3. Needham History: Giovanni Castano (needhamlocal.org) — A new ceramic plaque of longtime resident and artist Giovanni Castano’s snow-covered Hunnewell Street garden has just joined the Needham History Center’s collection, complementing his well-known painting “From My Studio Window.” The story traces Castano’s career, his deep affection for Needham, and how his home and garden near Booth Street and Rosemary Brook became enduring subjects of his art.
   

4. Bay State Conference: First-year Weymouth, Needham girls basketball coaches face adversity (masslive.com) — Needham High’s new girls basketball coach Lindsay Miller opened her Bay State Conference tenure with a big win over Weymouth, even after star senior Annie Camozzi was lost to an ACL tear. Players like senior captain Hannah Levine stepped up, scoring 17 points and embracing Miller’s emphasis on resilience and positive team culture as the Rockets adjust to their new identity.
