BC Purchases Former Mount Alvernia High School Site In Newton
The all-girls Catholic school closed in June due to enrollment and financial challenges. The 23-acre site features 3 buildings and a garage.

NEWTON, MA — Boston College announced Tuesday that it has purchased the former Mount Alvernia High School campus and convent property in Newton and that the school will use the land for educational and administrative purposes.
The school did not reveal how much it paid for the 23-acre property, which is located at 790 Centre Street directly across from BC's Newton Campus.
Mount Alvernia High School, an all-girls Catholic school, closed at the end of the 2022-23 school year due to enrollment and financial challenges.

At the time, the school's owners, the Missionary Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, announced their intention to sell the property, which contains three buildings and a garage comprising 73,850 gross square feet.
According to BC officials, the Franciscan Sisters reached out to the university with the goal of keeping the property in the hands of a Catholic educational institution. The Franciscan Sisters and BC have maintained close ties for more than 85 years, according to BC.

Though BC did not reveal any specific plans for the site, University Spokesperson Jack Dunn said the property would be used for educational and administrative purposes.
