Charles River Food Co-op To Launch Membership Campaign June 15

The campaign is the first step toward establishing a new grocery store to serve the communities in Newton, Waltham, and surrounding areas.

NEWTON, MA — The Charles River Food Co-op will officially start its membership campaign on June 15, the first step toward launching a new grocery store to serve the communities in Watertown, Newton, Waltham, and surrounding areas.

According to organizers, the co-op is already seeing tremendous engagement, with 70 new paid members signing up even before the official membership campaign launched.

“We are very excited about the engagement we’re seeing so far,” Board President Nick Quaranto said in a statement. “In addition to 70 new members, we’ve had many emails and feedback coming from the community within the first few days, which has been incredibly helpful as we finalize our website and FAQs ahead of our official launch on June 15.”

The Charles River Food Co-op started with a group of local residents who were sad about the closing of Russo’s in Watertown and wanted to replicate some of the store’s unique qualities, such as its fresh produce and food diversity, in addition to focusing on sustainability and community.

While the co-op doesn't have a storefront yet, recruiting member-owners to buy shares will allow the group to build the financial foundation they need to fuel the next stage of their growth and fund the eventual store opening.
