Five Things You Need to Know Today: Oct. 23

1. Domestic Violence Month kick-off event. Lasell College will kick off Domestic Violence Awareness Month with a kick-off event today at 12:30 p.m. in Yamawaki Auditorium.  Mayor Setti Warren will give an introduction at the event followed by a special speaker who will discuss her experience with teen dating violence. Light refreshments will be served. 

2. More train delays. CSX will continue signal cutover work on the Worcester/Framingham commuter rail line today and delays will likely extend into this morning. Passengers can expect to experience delays of 10-15 minutes throughout the morning commute.

3. Land Use. The Board of Aldermen's Land Use Committee will meet for a working session tonight at 7 p.m. in room 222 at City Hall. The committee has a number of items on its agenda, including a special permit application to demolish the two-story building at 429 Cherry St. and in its place, construct a three-story, multi-family structure with 13 residential units and office space on the first floor. They will also consider a special permit application to extend a current structure and construct a two-story commercial building at 49, 55 and 71 Needham St. The permit would allow for retail space, a 150-seat restaurant and freestanding signs. 4. Ribbon cutting. Mayor Setti Warren and the Newton-Needham Chamber of Commerce will celebrate a ribbon cutting at Terry O'Reilly's tonight at 5:30 p.m. 

5. Reinventing Yourself in Today's Economy. The Newton Free Library will host an event tonight titled "Reinventing Yourself in Today's Economy." Career development coach Danila Székely will be the featured speaker in the program, which is for people who are considering a career transition, currently engaged in a job search or are interested in re-defining their career. The event starts at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
