NEWTON, MA — The West Newton Armory on 1135 Washington St. is being transformed into an affordable housing complex, according to a report from NBC 10 Boston.

The castle-like structure was built in the early 1900’s, and the state sold the property to Newton in 2021 for just $1. In return, the city promised to transform the property into housing units. Developers Metro West Collaborative and Civico are leading the way on the construction that is creating 43 apartment units.

Mayor Ruthanne Fuller said the location is prime for affordable living units and that affordable housing is a necessity with rising rent costs.
