Newton Election Results 2020: How Trump Support Compared To 2016

NEWTON, MA — President Trump's loss in Massachusetts on Tuesday was expected in the perennially deep blue state, but how did he fare among Newton residents this time around?

According to official vote totals from Newton City election officials, Trump gained votes, but lost overall support in Newton in 2020. His share of the vote waned ever so slightly from 17.3 percent in 2016 to nearly 16.7 percent in 2020.

In 2016, he earned 7,764 votes compared to 8,165 votes in 2020. Both years, Ward 8, precinct 1 gave him the most support.

In 2020, some 48,839 people cast ballots. In 2016, it was 44,845.

Tuesday's vote continued a heated battle for control of the White House, unfolding during a pandemic that killed nearly a quarter of a million Americans before Election Day.

CNN reported in October that polling put Biden up by 25 points among women voters. According to the final 2016 pre-election polls, Clinton won women voters by 13 points among likely voters and 14 points among registered voters.

Democratic-leaning groups were worried that President Donald Trump would try to claim victory in the election before all votes are counted as he did Tuesday night.

Trump doubled down on claims Wednesday that he had won the 2020 presidential election, while Joe Biden's campaign said it would fight any efforts by the president to go to the U.S. Supreme Court to prevent outstanding ballots from being tabulated.

The presidential election may not be decided for days or longer because of higher numbers of absentee ballots cast amid the coronavirus pandemic.
