NEWTON, MA — Spring in Newton means sunshine, fresh local produce and the start of the Farmers Market. But with fear about the spread of the coronavirus this year, it was unclear what it might mean for the seasonal market —until now.

The Tuesday and Saturday farmers' markets will go on, though in a new location beginning late June. Despite a few changes, organizers hope residents will visit and support the local farms and businesses.

Instead of having a Tuesday market at Newton Centre's Cold Spring Park and one on Elm Street in West Newton on Saturdays, both have been moved to Newton South High School, in an effort to allow enough room for distancing.

Officials chose the school's parking lot in part because the state requires access via a single entrance and exit, South has plenty of parking, space for vendors and customers, and is available throughout the summer.

Some of the changes you'll notice? This year there will be an option to pay-in-advance with curb-side pickup and shopping will be no-touch shopping.

The city said they will have rigorous screening and cleaning protocols in place for vendors and guidance for customers. As with grocery stores, shoppers are asked to wear a face covering while shopping. This year market organizers are also asking that you leave your dogs and children at home while attending the market.
