Newton Holding Citywide Food Drive For Those In Need

The event is in response to the potential stoppage of the federal food assistance program, SNAP.

NEWTON, MA — Mayor Ruthanne Fuller announced a citywide food drive beginning on Friday.

The drive is in response to the anticipated stoppage of the federal food assistance program known as SNAP that is slated to begin on Saturday, Nov. 1 as long as the government shutdown continues. More than 1 million Massachusetts residents benefit from the program.

Donations of non-perishable food are now being collected at numerous locations throughout Newton. The collection opportunities are at City Hall on 1000 Commonwealth Ave., Newton Free Library on 330 Homer St., Newton Older Adult Services on 20 Hartford St., Newton Resource Recovery Center on 115 Rumford Ave., American Legion Post 440 on 295 California St., Family Access of Newton on 492 Waltham St., John M. Boys and Girls Club on 675 Watertown St., all Village Bank, Eastern Bank, and West Suburban YMCA locations, and Fire Stations 2, 3, 4, 7 and 10.

“We are working closely with our three Newton food pantries ─ the Centre Street Food Pantry, Newton Food Pantry, and the Arabic Baptist Church Pantry ─ and wonderful partners to help people continue to have access to nutritious food and essential resources during this difficult time,” Fuller said.

Fuller also encouraged financial donations to any of the city’s food pantries.
