Newton Man in Cuba Caught in the Middle of Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy could be making its way to New England early next week.

Although Hurricane Sandy has yet to reach the Northeast, one Newton resident has already weathered the storm.

Dick Simon, 60, is currently in Cuba and was in the middle of Hurricane Sandy when it hit the island yesterday, according to WHDH.

Simon, who is on a religious trip with his wife, said he was sleeping in his Santiago hotel room when the storm hit around 1 a.m., WHDH reported. Trees and power lines were knocked down as winds hit 110 miles per hour.

“You’re hearing metal reverberating everywhere and crashing glass and wind whipping through trees,” Simon told WHDH. “Trees down everywhere here.”

Although exact details on Sandy's east coast landfall are uncertain, the storm will likely have an impact on the Boston area starting Monday.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has already issued Hurricane safety tips in preparation for the storm.
