Police Log: A Third OUI Offense and an Assault with a Broom

Repeat offender 

A Newton man was arrested Thursday, Sept. 6, after he was reportedly driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Louis R. Rubera, 66, of 15 Bank St., was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol (third offense), driving with a revoked registration, driving without insurance, leaving the scene of property damage and a marked lanes violation, police said.

According to reports, officers responded to the area near Walnut Street and Centre Street after reports came in that a black SUV was operating erratically in that area. 

When police responded to the scene, they found a vehicle matching the description turning on to Lincoln Street. After pulling the driver over, officers could smell steam from the vehicle's engine as well as a strong odor of alcohol coming off the driver's (Rubera) breath, reports said.

Assault with a broom

A Newton man was arrested on Thursday, Sept. 6 after police responded to Woodcliff Road for reports of a family disturbance.

Mark David Schwartz, 25, of 198 Woodcliff Road, was arrested for two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon (a door and a broom), police said.

Domestic incident leads to arrest

A Newton man was arrested Thursday, Sept. 6 after police responded to Ward Street for reports of a domestic incident.

Paul Christian Galbraith, 50, of 538 Ward St., was arrested for domestic assault, police said.

Possible phone scam

A Centre Street resident told police on Thursday, Sept. 6 that he had received a phone call from a "male party with a foreign accent" claiming he was from the New York Department of State. 

According to reports, the caller told the man he had an outstanding case against him and needed to pay $300 in a money order to get the case dismissed. When the man asked for specifics, the caller was "evasive," reports said.

Stolen bicycle

A man came into last Thursday, Sept. 6, after his bike was reportedly stolen from the in West Newton. 

According to reports, the bike owner rode his bike to the CVS and left it outside around 8:50 p.m. He left the bike there for seven or eight minutes and when he returned, it was missing. 

The bike was described as a 1982 bright red BMX model "Kent" bike that had a bright orange seat. 

Smashed windshield

Police responded to Allen Avenue on Friday, Sept. 7 after someone reported his Volkswagen Beatle's back windshield had been smashed overnight. 

According to reports, the incident happened sometime between 11:30 p.m. Thursday and 6:45 a.m. Friday.
