Two-Car Crash Involving Wellesley Police Cruiser on Route 9 at Route 128
Investigation into the crash may slow down the evening commute in Newton.

Route 9 may be a bit slow for part of the evening commute, as Wellesley Police are looking into a crash that happened at about 3 p.m. this afternoon.
The crash took place at the Route 9 intersection with 128, west of the interchange. The incident involved a Wellesley Police cruiser and one other vehicle.
According to Wellesley Police, the police cruiser was overseeing a detail at Route 9 Eastbound with a National Grid crew. It was behind a cone cordon inside the work site. The other vehicle drove into the cordoned-off area and into the police cruiser.

Both the driver and the officer were transported to Newton-Wellesley Hospital. The officer was evaluated and did not sustain any life-threatening injuries. The officer has since been released from the hospital.
The driver of the other vehicle is at the hospital, in police custody, charged with driving after a suspension, and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Investigating the crash will bog down the evening commute, so drivers have been advised to avoid the area. The Wellesley Police Department issued this announcement by e-mail:
Wellesley Police is investigating a two car traffic crash on Rt 9 east at Rt 128. At least one lane is blocked and the investigation will take some hours to complete. Traffic on Rt 9 east near Rt 95 is extremely delayed. Avoid the area through the evening commute.
