- This Day in History: In 1820, President James Monroe signed the Missouri Compromise, admitting Missouri into the Union as a slave state but prohibiting slavery in the rest of the northern Louisiana Purchase territory. In 1836, the Mexican siege of the Alamo ended when the Mexican army defeated the Texas volunteers. In 1857, the Supreme Court's Dred Scott decision ruled that blacks could not sue in federal court to be citizens. In 1981, Walter Cronkite appeared on his last episode of "CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite."
