North Andover Takes Precautions Against EEE

With neighboring towns deemed "high risk" for EEE, North Andover has schedule spraying and issued warnings to residents.

NORTH ANDOVER, MA — North Andover said it would spray for mosquitoes Tuesday night, weather permitting, after Andover and North Andover were labeled as high risk areas for Eastern equine encephalitis by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. The town is also recommending residents end outdoor activities by 7 p.m. through the month of September. North Andover Public Schools is adjusting sports schedules to comply with the recommendation.

"Please be aware that spraying only reduces the risk of mosquito borne diseases and it does not eliminate all mosquitoes or the risk of disease transmission," North Andover said in a notice sent to residents. "Personal protection is essential and the number one way to prevent mosquito borne diseases."

No mosquitoes collected in North Andover have tested positive for EEE in regular testing conducted throughout Massachusetts. The town remains under the state's "moderate" risk designation. In addition to Andover and Methuen, mosquitoes carrying the disease have been collected in Boxford and Pelham, NH.
