Northborough MCAS 2017 Scores: Students Well Above State Average In 'Advanced' List

Here are the results for students in grades 3-8 and 10th graders.

NORTHBOROUGH, MA—This year's MCAS procedure is confusing at best. To read up on all the changes, click here.

In short, a "new" MCAS test was administered to public school students in grades 3-8. Among the changes are a new scoring system that says whether students were exceeding, meeting, partially meeting, or not meeting expectations.

The "old" MCAS was taken by 10th grade students. The scoring system graded students as advanced, proficient, needs improvement, or warning/failing.

The subjects were math, English, and science. The science portion was only administered to students in grades 5, 8, and 10.

The 10th grade numbers are a bit easier to digest. Here is the percentage of students among Algonquin Regional High School 10th graders who scored advanced, proficient, needs improvement, and warning/failing.

  • In math, there were 73 advanced, 21 proficient, 4 needs improvement and 2 warning/failing. That is generally even with last year's numbers, with 2 percent more students scoring proficient.
  • In English, there were 76 advanced, 21 proficient, 2 needs improvement and 1 warning/failing. That is a 5 percent boost in students scoring proficient.
  • In science, there were 62 advanced, 32 proficient, 5 needs improvement and 1 warning/failing. That is an impressive 11 percent boost in advanced scoring. Four percent of that increase came from the group which formerly needed improvement.

State averages in percentages:

  • Math: 53 advanced, 26 proficient, 14 needs improvement and 8 warning/failing
  • English: 44 advanced, 47 proficient, 6 needs improvement and 3 warning/failing
  • Science: 32 advanced, 42 proficient, 21 needs improvement and 5 warning/failing
