North End's Eliot School Slated for Longer School Day

Extended learning time could begin for the 2014-2015 school year.

Eliot School students could get an additional 300 hours of classroom time thanks to a grant by the Time Collaborative. Eliot is one of three Boston school slated for the extra learning time, according to a Boston Public Schools press release.

“For years we have argued that a traditional six-hour school day is not enough time to provide high-quality instruction in core subjects while also offering arts, health education and opportunities for individualized learning,” interim Superintendent John McDonough said according to the release. “This collaborative fits into our larger strategy to expand learning time across our schools.”

There are 35 Boston Schools employing extended time thanks to several funding programs. The Eliot's program, funded by the Ford Foundation and National Center on Time & Learning, focuses on critical-thinking skills and more one-on-one time between students and teachers, according to the release.
