Norwood Hospital Temporarily Closed After Flood

At least 100 patients were evacuated from the hospital.

NORWOOD, MA — Norwood Hospital is temporarily closed after flooding caused power outages in parts of the hospital on Sunday night. Heavy rain flooded the hospital basement and the hospital complex — cars in the hospital campus parking lot were submerged on Sunday.

No injuries were reported as a result of the power outage and the most critical patients were moved out of the hospital in the first wave of evacuations. At least 100 patients were evacuated and up to 40 more are planned to move on Monday as well.

"Norwood was hit by this rainstorm that dumped tremendous amounts of water, and led to emergency calls all over town," said Chief Morrice. "When the hospital became the focus of the situation, Norwood Fire, Police, and the Department of Public Works worked in conjunction to mitigate the initial issues that were faced. Ambulances from Norwood, as well as the surrounding communities and private companies were critical in assisting with moving patients at Norwood Hospital to other hospitals across the area."

Crews were still pumping water out of the hospital complex on Monday.

"The Town of Norwood saw four inches of rain in less than 90 minutes yesterday evening," said Norwood General Manager Tony Mazzucco. "As of noon today, residents across town have power and all of the roads are open. We're expecting additional rainfall, but don't anticipate additional flash flooding."
