Lyons Reelected as Chair, Chief King Gives Last Report to Board

Lyons Reelected as Board Chair

After Monday's Town Election, the Board of Selectmen started off Tuesday night's meeting by reelecting Michael Lyons chairman.

Selectman Helen Donohue initially proposed to postpone the election of a chairman until the Board's full membership was present, as Selectman William Plasko was absent Tuesday night. When put to a vote, the four present members tied at 2-2, not passing her motion.

Selectman Paul Bishop nominated Lyons for reelection, and a 3-1 vote ensured him the position.

Chief Bartley King Jr., of the Norwood Police Department, gave his last monthly report of departmental activity at the meeting before his retirement.

The chief's report included information on a in March, of a suspect who King said local addicts have referred to as the number one dealer in the area.

King said the suspect is currently being held on $1 million bail.

In the past month police also arrested two juveniles in connection with several incidents of graffiti in South Norwood, King said.

Selectman Bishop thanked the chief for his report and complimented the department on the 22 drug-related arrests that occurred this past month.

Chief King shook hands with each member of the Board, and said that he was proud of his years of service in Norwood.

"I am, perhaps, the proudest police officer in the state of Massachusetts," he said.

Voter Turnout 'Embarrassing'

A couple of the Selectmen also commented on , and the small voter turnout. Only 14.12 percent of Norwood voters went to the polls, and the Board was concerned.

"I find it embarrassing, to be honest with you," Selectman Lyons said.
