Crystal Lake Restoration Underway

The Crystal Lake project, which has been in the works for decades, is finally underway.

PEABODY, MA – Tons of sediment are being taken from the basin at Crystal Lake: The beginning of a project that has been in the works for decades.

"Peabody residents have waited a long time for this project to become a reality," said Mayor Ted Bettencourt. "Crystal Lake was once a great source of pride and enjoyment for Peabody families and there has been a tremendous longing to bring it back to its former splendor."

State Rep. Joyce Spiliotis secured $800,000 in state funds to dredge the lake in 2006, and the money has been earmarked in a city account since.

"Make no mistake the seeds of this project were planted by Joyce Spiliotis," said Bettencourt. "It is a testament to her hard work and diligence, for which she was renowned, as well as her love of the City of Peabody, which will be felt by all those who visit Crystal Lake in the years ahead."

Tons of sediment will be removed from the basin to restore the water, and new amenities will be added to the area so families and nature lovers can enjoy the lake. The project received a $400,000 state grant, secured by the city's legislators led by Senator Joan Lovely, Rep. Tom Walsh, and Rep. Ted Speliotis. The remaining funds came from existing capital projects accounts and city bond sales.
