Peabody Group Wants To Change Voting Rules

By moving local elections to even from odd-numbered years, the city could cut costs and increase turnout, the petitioners said.

PEABODY, MA — A group of Peabody residents calling themselves Peabody Votes Together 2021 has begun circulating petitions in hopes of getting a ballot questions that would shift local elections to even-numbered years. The goal, the group said, is to increase voter turnout by pairing the local election with state and federal elections, which typically produce higher voter turnout numbers. The city could also benefit with lower costs from keeping the polls closed in odd-numbered years, the group said.
