PEABODY, MA — Essex County prosecutors arraigned Selvin Manuel Lima, 23, of Lawrence, Monday afternoon in the intensive care unit at Brigham & Women's Hospital, where he is being treated for injuries sustained in a crash that left an 11-year-old Peabody girl dead. Taysha Rohena Silva was killed in the crash at Andover Street and Winthrop Avenue around 6 p.m. Saturday. Her 29-year-old mother, eight-year-old sister, 15-year-old cousin and her mother's 27-year-old boyfriend remain hospitalized with serious injuries.
Lima was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Friday. He was charged with manslaughter, motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury (4 counts), operating after license suspension (subsequent offense), failing to stop for a police officer, marked lanes violation and speeding.
Prosecutors say Lima was fleeing from police after an attempted traffic stop when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed. Lawrence Police did not pursue Lima when he fled during the traffic stop, according to court documents.
