MARSHFIELD, MA — Last week, Marshfield police officers received a call early in the morning that ended with an officer getting assaulted, two residents attacked with a bat, and a sex offender getting arrested.

On Friday, Jan. 7, the Marshfield Police Department received a call with no one on the line, but in the background screaming and crying could be heard, police said.

Officers responded to the house where the call came in, showing up at 1829 Main Street just after 5:30 a.m.

Police say when they got there, they were told everything was fine - they were just looking for their dog.

But officers say they noticed one of the residents had a head injury, and due to the nature of the earlier call, they wanted to do a wellness check.

They immediately found the dog in a bedroom, and then found a man unconscious on the floor, bleeding heavily from his head.

In another bedroom, police found Okeio Edwards, 38, a Level 3 sex offender from Rhode Island, hiding in a closet.

Anna Halachis, 19, became argumentative, yelling and swearing at officers. Police say she spit in an officer's face then picked up a 20-pound propane tank and swung it at the officer before she was detained and brought to the hospital.

During their investigation, police found that Devin Chavis, 27, of Marshfield was hitting one of the resident's cars with a wooden baseball bat and proceeded to hit him with the bat when he tried to stop him.

Edwards then called 911, and Chavis continued to beat him before Edwards was able to grab the bat -hitting Chavis in self-defense.

Chavis was immediately placed under arrest, screaming at the other two telling them not to tell police what happened.

Chavis was arraigned in Plymouth District Court on Monday, Jan. 10th, and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (2 counts), intimidation of a witness (3 counts), and assault and battery.

Police say he was already out on bail from another case. His bail was revoked and he will be held until Feb. 8th.

Halachis is facing criminal charges including assault and battery on a police officer and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

As a Level 3 sex offender, Edwards had been living in Marshfield yet failed to register with the Marshfield Police Department or the Sex Offender Registry Board.

An investigation found he had been staying at the Main St. house for more than the allowed 14 days per calendar year and 4 days per month.

He was arraigned Jan. 13 and charged with failing to register as a sex offender but was released from court on his own recognizance.
