Native American Anti-Nuke Activist Speaks in Plymouth Sunday

On Sunday, February 24, Native American activist Charmaine White Face will be in Plymouth during the Walking for Peace--for the People--for the Earth event.

Charmaine White Face, a proponent of a nuclear-free future, is a member of the Oglala Sioux of South Dakota and the organization Defenders of the Black Hills.

Supporters will gather at the gates of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant at 2 p.m. Sunday for a drumming and chanting ceremony, according to Cape Cod Today.

The walk marks the second anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan that seriously damaged the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, causing the releases of radioactive materials. That event occured March 11, 2011.

Participants will then walk to the First Parish Church where Charmaine White Face will give her presentation "America's Chernobyl" about the impact of uranium mining on native lands from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. A potluck hosted by the church will precede the program from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

2013 marks the 12th year the Walk for a New Spring will take place in New England. For more information about this year's walk, download the brochure from the New England Peace Pagoda.

Pilgrim is owned by Entergy Corp. of Louisiana and has made headlines recently as several local groups continue to oppose the facility's operation. Several Cape Codders and members of groups including Pilgrim Coalition and Cape Downwinders are also gearing up for their day in court in March.

The eleven defendants are facing trespassing charges in connection with a protest at the plant on May 20, 2012.
