📰 News we're reading

1. At long last, bye bye Bert's (plymouthindependent.org) — Demolition has finally begun on Bert’s, the long-abandoned restaurant at the entrance to Plymouth Beach that neighbors have called an eyesore and safety hazard for years. After months of permitting delays, crews are tearing down the storm-battered building, clearing the way for a future elevated project that’s still in early planning stages with the town.

2. Former Old Colony Voc-Tech teacher convicted by jury of raping student (southcoasttoday.com) — A former Old Colony Voc-Tech teacher has been convicted in Plymouth County Superior Court of multiple sex offenses against a student and is awaiting sentencing while held by the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office. Local prosecutors and Rochester Police say the verdict reflects extensive investigative work and emphasize their commitment to protecting vulnerable students in area schools.

3. A Focus on History: December 18 through December 24 (thevoice.us) — One of this week’s historical notes recalls the Mayflower’s 1620 arrival at what’s now Plymouth and the founding of Plymouth Colony, a cornerstone of local identity. The rest of the piece surveys major world and U.S. events that also occurred between December 18 and 24 in other years.

4. The making of a chef: David Turin of David's restaurants in Maine (newscentermaine.com) — A successful Maine chef’s career story includes an early chapter in Plymouth, where he opened his first high-end French restaurant at just 25. He reflects on the hard lessons of running that Plymouth spot and how they shaped his customer-focused approach that now sustains his popular Portland restaurants decades later.
