Dry stone walls have been used for thousands of years all across the world to define fields and to create boundaries between neighbors. New Englanders often take stone walls ‘for granite’, but Kevin Gardner, author of The Granite Kiss: Traditions and Techniques of Building New England Stone Walls, appreciates the history, technique and aesthetics behind these structures. The author will appear at the Reading Public Library on Tuesday, April 24 at 7:00 p.m. to present the program: Stone Walls of New England.
How did New England acquire its thousands of miles of stone walls? How were they built? How have their styles emerged and changed over time? Gardner will discuss the significance of stone walls to the landscape of New England as he demonstrates how to construct a stone wall.
This program is presented by LiveWires – Lifelong Learning in the Library and sponsored by the Friends of the Reading Public Library. This event is free of charge. For further information, call the Library at 781-944-0840.
