Kindergarten Admission Age Changed

Children have to be five-years-old to enroll in kindergarten.

The School Committee approved a new policy at their meeting last Monday. Children now have to be five-years-old to enroll in kindergarten, the North Reading Transcript reported on Thursday.

Under the previous policy, students could be five or six-years-old by the first day of school. Some were concerned that the date would prevent a student who completed private kindergarten and turned six after August 31 from enrolling in first grade, according to the Transcript. However, requesting a readiness examination from the North Reading Pupil Services Department would prevent that from happening.

All final decisions on admission to first grade are made by the Superintendent of Schools.
