NRMS Science Olympiad Team Places in State Tournament
After only a few years competing in the tournament, North Reading Middle School places second.
The North Reading Middle School Science Olympiad team finished second in the State Tournament this month. The team has 41 members, 15 varsity and 26 junior varsity.
This was the team's fourth year competing. Last year, they took third place and beat that record this year.
According Head Coach Marc Gorgenyi, the team started off their year in the fall with recruiting and learned about the 23 events for the season including Crime Busters, Experimental Design, Mission Possible and more. After assigning students to each event, they spent the rest of the season training.

"Students with several events had several days a week of practice. The rules are given to you in September with all the guidelines and students are challenged to building, study, solve, and learn concepts in order to master that event – how challenging! It all comes down to the Tournament which determines how well all that hard work paid off. And for NRMS, it did," said Gorgenyi.
The team placed second in Crime Busters and Microbe Missions, third in Experimental Design, Mission Possible, Mousetrap Vehicle, Optics, and Storm the Castle. For most of the other events, they placed in the top 10. Their success in all of the events combined landed them in second place.

"None of this could be accomplished without the dedication of several parents who coach these events and the determination and commitment of the entire team. We are already thinking about next year and how we can continue this tradition of excellence in Science," said Gorgenyi. "What a great opportunity our students have to put their love and passion for science to use. I can only hope that many of them will pursue a career in the science/technology fields."
