NRHS Freshman Secures Spot at Golf State Finals

Ryan Delaney shot a 77 at sectionals to secure a spot in the finals.

Ryan Delaney, a freshman on the Varsity golf team at North Reading High School, shot a 77 at the Division 3 North Sectionals last week to secure a spot at the State Finals. Delaney will be the only player to attend the finals Monday, Nov. 5.

Delaney has been playing golf since he was seven-years-old, but became more serious about the sport when he was 10, he said. He is now on the high school Varisty golf team and takes lessons with Golf Pro Chris Carter at the Hillview Country Club. Currently, he practices five times per week at Hillview and most days during the summer.

Delaney says he loves golf because it's a "sport I can beat my Dad at, and also because I can play three seasons out of the year."

Shooting a 77 at sectionals last week was a personal best in a high school match for Delaney. The Division 3 State Finals will be held at Redtail Golf Club in Devens on Monday, Nov. 5.

"I'm looking forward to the states because it's an honor to represent my school, especially as a freshman," he said.

Delaney would like the opportunity to play in college and perhaps even professionally, but says he is just focused on making the high school team next year.

"I am so grateful to my coach Brian McCauliffe for giving me this opportunity to play on the Varsity [team] and to all my teammates for taking me under their wing. Especially Dennis Rollfs for being such a mentor to me.  It's been a rewarding season," he said.
