World War II Hand Grenade Found

The following information was supplied by the North Reading police department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The following is a look at some of the calls handled by the  from Friday through Tuesday. The information is open to the public.

Arrests

At 12:14 p.m. on Monday, Valerie Michelle McSpadden, 23, of 31 Cedar St., was arrested for assault and battery on Cedar Street.

Friday, Dec. 23

  • At 10:11 a.m., an officer reported that a mailbox was lying in the roadway on Strawberry Lane. 
  • At 11:44 a.m., an employee from requested an officer assist with a customer that was causing a disturbance when picking up a vehicle. The customer was gone when the officer arrived.
  • At 12:32 p.m., a employee reported that a customer drove off without paying for gas. Police found the customer who agreed to return to Hess to pay for the gas.

Saturday, Dec. 24

  • At 1:59 p.m., an unknown caller reported dogs inside a car parked at with all of the windows up. An officer checked on the dogs.

Sunday, Dec. 25

  • At 9:34 a.m., a Sherman Road resident reported that someone tried to break into a house the night before. They saw marks on their rear slider that appear to be from a crow bar.
  • At 8:04 p.m., several callers reported gun shots near Mt. Vernon Street. Police investigated, but found no evidence of gun shots.

Monday, Dec. 26

  • At 3:10 p.m., Onstar reported a motor vehicle accident on Main Street.
  • At 3:24 p.m., a Dogwood Lane resident reported that his vehicle was hit while parked in the Walmart parking lot on Dec. 24. Police viewed Walmart's surveillance video and were not able to see another car hit the Dogwood Lane resident's car.
  • At 4:12 p.m., several emergency callers reported a car accident on North Street.

Tuesday, Dec. 27

  • At 2:15 p.m., a Main Street resident reported that her laptop was missing. 
  • At 9:03 a.m., an employee from Hess reported hypodermic needles found in trash. Police disposed of the needles.
  • At 11:29 a.m., a Strawberry Lane resident reported finding a hand grenade that his grandfather had from World War II. The MSP Bomb Squad responded.
  • At 11:41 a.m., an unknown caller reported a vehicle driving off after hitting another vehicle in the Walmart parking lot.
