A new group of 10 students recently completed a two-day training session at the Deanna and Sidney Wolk Center for Memory Health to become certified home health aides. The training was led by Senior Director of Community-Based Long-Term Services and Supports Rebecca Arbouet, and Personal Assistance Manager Jenny Usherenko. It was organized by Wellness Coach Rachel Fox and Coordinator Alla Azarkov. The students provide companionship, cognitive engagement, and personal care to people with dementia or cognitive impairment, providing respite to them, their caregiver, or their families. Thus far, the program has provided at-home respite care services to more than 15 families.

“The HHA training was very comprehensive, and the hands-on aspect gave me a greater appreciation for the care and patience that goes into home health care. I feel prepared to care for patients at their level of capacity. Rebecca and Jenny gave careful and detailed instructions to help prepare us for what we may encounter,” said one of the students.

The Innovative Respite Care Program is funded by a grant from the Alzheimer’s Association Center for Dementia Respite Innovation. The program helps aides gain part-time experience and offers families a more affordable respite care option.
