Officials: Roslindale Playground Fire Wasn't the First

The Boston Fire Department said it's responded to the playground before. Investigators are looking into whether the incidents are related.

When firefighters arrived to douse the flames at a Roslindale playground Monday night, it wasn't their first time on the scene.

The Boston Fire Department said in a social media post Tuesday it had previously responded to a fire at the same Charles Sumner Elementary School park last month. That fire was discovered about 4:30 p.m., on April 18. It was small, did minimal damage and was doused with a water extinguisher, Boston Fire said.

It is unknown if the two incidents are related, fire officials said, but investigators are looking into both incidents.

On Monday night, firefighters arrived at the same playground just before 10 p.m. for a fire later determined to be the result of arson. This time, the flames were much more intense, extending "to trees with power lines running through them," according to the fire department.

The flames were out before midnight and nobody was hurt, Boston Fire said.
