Winner: 5 Things You May Not Know of Roslindale Substation

The winner received a 'Traffic' t-shirt.

 

The winner of last week's contest "5 Things You May Want to Know About the Roslindale Substation" was Susan Applegate - and she will be at the Roslindale Substation meeting on Wednesday. Applegate won a new "Traffic" t-shirt for being the first person to get all the answers correct. Several people sent in the right answers, but were not quick enough Here are the answers from last week:

1. Who helped paint the mural on the side of the Substation building? Glenn Williams helped paint it when he was in high school - Glenn was born in Roslindale and is a current resident, as well as an RVMS board member, educator, musician and producer.

2. What year was the Substation built and when did it go out of service? 1911 and 1971

3. What famous Boston-based architect designed the Substation? Robert S. Peabody of Peabody and Stearns; he also designed the Boston Custom House Tower.

4. What was the purpose of the Substation building? To convert AC power to DC in order to run the electrified trolley system.

5. Why does the Substation building have such a large front door? It allowed for large equipment to be moved in and out of the building and to help with ventilation during. 

There will be a meeting on Wed., Jan. 30, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. about the Substation project. The meeting will be at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 4192 Washington St., Roslindale.
