Police Busy With Trees, Limbs Down During Storm

The following information was provided by the Salem Police Department. Where charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police log:

Saturday, Oct. 29

  • At 6:17 p.m. police responded to Washington and Mill streets for a pedestrian involved in a car accident. The pedestrian was in the crosswalk according to police, when the car hit the person and sent the person onto the hood of the car and then onto the ground. The pedestrian was brought to the hospital with minor injuries. According to police, the pedestrian was under the influence of alcohol.
  • At 6:52 p.m. police responded to Lafayette Street for two people with weapons. Police confiscated two swords.
  • At 7 p.m. police moved along a group of people in the Charter Street cemetery. 
  • Police responded to a loud party on North Street at 9:16 p.m. Police told the party to quiet down.
  • At 9:59 p.m. police responded to a complaint about a loud television on Meadow Street. The residents said they had just finished watching the Bruins and would turn the television down.
  • At 10:08 p.m. police responded to the for a domestic disturbance. One person was arrested though details of that arrest were not included in the Salem Police arrest log.
  • A loud party was reported at 10:31 p.m. on Rope Street. Police told the host to turn the music down.
  • At 10:56 p.m. a large tree was blocking the roadway near 59 Essex Street and on top of a vehicle. 
  • At 11 p.m. a tree was reported in the roadway on Jefferson Avenue.
  • At 11:19 p.m. police responded to West Avenue for a past disturbance. Mary Strong was arrested (see below). 
  • At 11:30 p.m. loud music was reported on School Street. The host was told to turn the music down.
  • At 11:32 p.m. a tree came down on Ocean Avenue.
  • Two people were placed into protective custody after they refused to leave
  • At 11:58 p.m. a tree came down on Endicott Street and struck a parked car, cracking the windshield.

Sunday, Oct. 30

  • At 12:18 a.m. police responded to a report of wire down on Oakland Street.
  • At 12:19 a.m. police closed Gallows Hill Road for a transformer arching. National Grid was called.
  • At 12:33 a.m. an arching transformer was reported on Colby Street.
  • At 12:33 a.m. police responded to for a party that would not leave. According to the police log, when police arrived they found a "fully uniformed Buzz Lightyear (minus the space helmet) to be obviously intoxicated and unable to care for himself. For his and the entire universe's safety, Buzz was placed into protective custody."
  • At 12:38 a.m. a tree fell on a house on Fairmount Street. When police arrived, they didn't see any damage to the house.
  • Wires came down on Barton Street at 12:55 a.m.
  • At 1:17 a.m. police cleared two groups of people fighting with each other at Essex and Washington streets. One male was placed into protective custody.
  • At 1:27 a.m. police quieted a party on Mason Street.
  • At 1:30 a.m. a woman was placed into protective custody at
  • At 2:44 a.m. police responded to a past disturbance on Hancock Street. Karl Riess was arrested (see below).
  • At 5:03 a.m. wires were reported down on Summer Street.
  • At 5:45 a.m. police responded to 7-Eleven on North Street for a suspicious person. 
  • At 6:34 a.m. a resident reported a tree on their car on Clark Street.
  • At 6:53 a.m. a large tree limb was blocking Grant Road.
  • At 8 a.m. a resident of Summer Road reported a break-in. According to police, someone entered the garage through a window and pushed two four wheelers out of the garage. One of the four-wheelers was found in front of a nearby home, the other is still missing.
  • At 9:07 a.m. a tree on the power lines was reported on Savoy Road.
  • At 12:23 p.m. police responded to Liberty Street for kids throwing snow balls off the roof.
  • At 4 p.m. police responded to Manning Street for a tree branch that had fallen on a car.

The following people were arrested:

  • Mary Brennan Strong, 49, 1 Washington St., was arrested Saturday and charged with assault and battery and malicious destruction of property over $250.
  • Cory Collins, 21, 66 Loring Road, Winthrop, was arrested Sunday and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol (second offense) and having defective equipment.
  • Alfons Jahaj, 27, 45 Cabot St., Beverly, was arrested Sunday and charged with driving after license suspension and having an expired inspection sticker.
  • Karl S. Riess, 37, 29 Hancock St., was arrested Sunday and charged with assault and battery.
