Police Catch Tiny Burglar In The Act

The following information was provided by the Salem Police Department. When arrests are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police log:

Wednesday, Oct. 5

  • At 1:21 p.m. police responded to Bridge Street for a report of a motor vehicle break in. A window had been broken by a rock.
  • At 3:31 p.m. The reported two bogus $20 were passed at the store.
  • At 3:35 p.m. emergency personnel responded to Highland Avenue for a motor vehicle accident. There were no injuries.
  • At 4:38 p.m. a tree limb came down on Broad Street.
  • At 4:52 p.m. a resident of Cressey Avenue reported someone had broken into her home. When police arrived, they found broken glass and the kitchen in disarray. Police observed broken glasses and vases in the living room as well and "chew" marks around the windows in the living room. Police went upstairs and found a squirrel scratching at a closed window. Police closed all the doors except the front door, threw a shampoo bottle at the squirrel and it ran out the front door.
  • At 4:54 p.m. a large hole was reported on Road Street.
  • At 5:06 p.m. a parent told police their 7-year-old son had taken the cell phone of another child at daycare. The parents wanted police to talk to the son about taking other peoples' things.
  • At 6:12 p.m. police responded to a three-car roll-over accident on Highland Avenue. Three people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The three cars had heavy damage.

  • A pocketbook was reported stolen from the Old Spot at 12:03 a.m.
  • At 7:08 a.m. a resident of North Street reported someone had taken a ladder out of the shed, put it under the kitchen window and broke into the home. A number of items were reported missing.
  • At 7:24 a.m. police responded to a motor vehicle accident on Boston Street. A car had collided with a traffic sign before it came to rest at a tree. Teresita Romero, 25, 38 Whiting St., Lynn, was arrested and charged with defective equipment, driving without a license and driving to endanger.
  • At 8:05 a.m. police responded to a crash on North Street where a motorist fell asleep at the wheel and hit a light pole and traffic sign. The crash was due to sleep apnea. The man was issued a summons for driving to endanger.
  • At 8:45 a.m. an out-of-control teen was reported at
  • At 12:51 p.m. a pedestrian was struck on Highland Avenue. The person was transported to the hospital with a leg injury.
  • At 2:17 p.m. a pedestrian was struck on Highland Avenue by a car in the leg. The person refused medical treatment.

  • Michael A. Defazio, 41, 286 Washington St., was arrested and charged with disturbing the peace.
  • Kimberly Melideo, 18, 26 Nelson Ave., Georgetown, was arrested and charged with being a disorderly person.
  • Robert Elmer Uzdavinis III, 30, 14 Lathrop St., was arrested on three warrants.
  • Jeffrey Alan Hamor, 50, homeless, was arrested on a warrant.
  • Caleb A. Hester, 25, 56 Margin St., was arrested on a warrant.
  • Charles Eward Sanphy III, 25, 156 Willow Road, Nahant, was arrested on a warrant.
