Salem Interest-Free Loan Program For Homeowners Launched

Salem residents can apply for interest-free loans for emergency home repairs, heating upgrades and safety and health issues.

SALEM, MA — Salem homeowners in need of emergency repairs, heating upgrades and other health and safety house improvements are encouraged to apply for interest-free loans through the city's Housing Rehabilitation Loan Program.

The program is part of Mayor Dominick Pangallo's program to improve the quality and safety of city housing and could include electrical and plumbing upgrades, window and door replacement, heating system repairs, roofing and lead abatement, as well as disability modifications such as bath alterations and access ramps.

"Salem's Housing Rehabilitation Loan Program is one of our core housing programs, which has successfully assisted residents who would otherwise be unable to make the needed upgrades to their homes," said Mayor Pangallo.

The program is funded with funds provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. To qualify, owner-occupied households must meet income eligibility guidelines. Repayment options depend on the applicant's income and ability to pay. For lower income households, there are no monthly payments, and the loan is forgiven after 10 years (condo/single family) or 15 years (2-4 units).

Program Guidelines and applications for the Housing Rehabilitation Loan Program are available here or by contacting the City of Salem Department of Planning & Community Development at 978-619-5685.
