Six New Salem City Councilors Elected In Contested Races, Mayor Pangallo Wins First Full Term

SALEM, MA — Salem Mayor Dominick Pangallo was elected to his first full four-year term as mayor on Tuesday as he ran unopposed in the Salem municipal election.

"I'm honored and humbled to have Salem's vote to continue serving as mayor for this amazing city," Pangallo posted on social media at about 8:45 p.m. "There's so much still to do to keep our community vibrant and successful, and I’m ready to get to work making it a reality.

"Congratulations to the candidates who won election to the City Council and School Committee today, as well — and thank you to all who ran, whether they prevailed or not. Each and every person who volunteers to run for public office in Salem does so because they love this city — and that passion for our community is what makes us such a special place!"

There were also City Council races where all four incumbent At-Large Councilors won re-election and there were six contested races in the seven wards.

Alice Merkl was the top vote-getter in the At-Large race, according to unofficial results, where five candidates were running for four spots. Conrad Prosniewski finished second in the race, with Ty Hapworth third and Kyle Davis fourth. Davis finished about 1,200 votes clear of challenger John Harvey, who previously represented Ward 4.

In Ward 1, Erin Turowski ousted incumbent Cynthia Jeryzlo with 622 votes to 426.

In the Ward 2 race to succeed Caroline Watson-Felt, it was Andrew Smith who won with 734 votes in unofficial results to William Legault at 611.

In the Ward 3 race to succeed Patricia Morsillo, Jason Sydoriak earned the victory against Kevin Doherty with 449 votes to 233.

In the Ward 4 race to succeed Harvey, who sought an At-Large seat, Timothy Flynn edged Emmylou Manwill in the closest race of the night, 538 to 514.

"After a few years away, it feels great to have the chance to get back to work for our community," Flynn posted on social media on Tuesday night. "A huge thank you to everyone who supported me, came out to vote, and believed in me — it truly means a lot. I also want to send my best to my opponent for running a good campaign. It's clear we both care about making Ward 4 the best it can be."

In the Ward 5 race to succeed Jeff Cohen, Lydia King topped Zachary Calderon, 635 to 418.

In the Ward 6 race to succeed Megan Stott, who won a spot on the School Committee on Tuesday, Katelyn Holappa had 710 votes to Robert Camire's 262.

Andrew Varela ran in the only unopposed race in Ward 7.

Three School Committee candidates ran for three open School Committee seats with incumbent Beth Anne Cornell earning the most votes, followed by Stott and Yamily Byas.
