Salem Named One of Best 'Undersung' U.S. Cities to Visit

Salem has been named by an Australian travel writer as a "second-tier" city that is "unquestionably worth a detour from the big boys."

Salem has been named one of the "other U.S. cities you must visit" by the Sydney Morning Sentinel newspaper in Australia.

Salem was on a list of "second-tier" cities that are "unquestionably worth a detour from the big boys," writes the Sentinel's David Whitley. He goes on to say Salem is among the "10 criminally undersung US cities" that is an "underhyped hotspots."

Joining Salem on the list are San Diego; Philadelphia; Pittsburg; Fort Worth, Texas; Baltimore; Santa Barbara, Calif.; Key West, Florida; Austin, Texas and Portland, Oregon.

The Sentinel called Salem a "hokey spookfest for all things supernatural and ghostly" that is "done so wholeheartedly, and in such a handsome old New England setting."

It recommends visitors check out Salem Historical Tours, The Witch Dungeon and Peabody-Essex Museum. Visitors are cautioned for price increases during October during Haunted Happenings and the lead-up to Halloween. The Herald recommends Australian visitors fly to Los Angeles to Boston and take the train to Salem.
