Salem Planting Trees To Celebrate Arbor Day

The city will plant three new elm trees in the median at Hawthorne Boulevard.

SALEM, MA – Keep an eye out for some new greenery on Hawthorne Boulevard: The City of Salem is planting three new trees to celebrate Arbor Day on Wednesday, April 26.

The city is planting three large caliper trees, sized to compensate for trees removed on Essex Street for the Peabody Essex Museum's expansion. The trees are 5-inch diameter Valley Forge American Elms, and will be planted with help from Iron Tree.

The trees will be planted in the Hawthorne Boulevard median across from the Immaculate Conception Church.

Salem has been a designated "Tree City USA" by the Arbor Day Foundation since 2001 and places a high priority on maintaining and managing its public trees. Last year the City completed a pilot phase of a public tree inventory and is now pursuing a state grant to complete the rest of the inventory city-wide.
