GoFundMe Believed To Be Scam Actually Student-Run
A fake GoFundMe page has been trying to raise money using the police department name
SALEM— An unauthorized GoFundMe page was set up this weekend by a student, and has been flagged by the Salem Police Department. The fundraising page was attempting to fundraise for an "Explorer Post," which is sometimes known as a program to help young adults interested in law enforcement to become involved through training programs. GoFundMe is a personal online fundraising website. The fundraising campaign is now listed as "complete and no longer active." It raised $20.
According to a Facebook post by the Salem Police Department, they were "unaware of this project that was being conducted by a student. The Salem Police Department was not notified and would never authorize funds being solicited on behalf of the department."
We've been made aware of a GoFundMe page raising money for an Explorer Post. This is a scam & not authorized by us. Do not give money. pic.twitter.com/2lcK9bs7VE
