Salem State Mourns Loss Of Marblehead Lacrosse Player Sam Cioffi
The school said the Marblehead High alumnus died of a medical emergency Sunday morning.
SALEM, MA — The Salem State and Marblehead school communities are mourning a standout lacrosse player who died unexpectedly this weekend.
Salem State University postponed its scheduled school athletics award ceremony — the VESPYS — scheduled for Tuesday while announcing that Marblehead High alumnus Sam Cioffi died of a medical emergency on Sunday morning.
Cioffi had just broken the single-season school goals record on Friday night and was a finalist for a school award for Record Setting Performance of the Year. He scored three goals Friday night for a total of 55 in 16 games during his junior season.

Salem State said counseling services were available for students on Monday and that a vigil is scheduled in Cioffi's memory for 7 p.m. Tuesday night at Alumni Field.
"Please join us in keeping Sam's family, teammates, coaches and friends in your thoughts," the school said in a statement.
