Salem State Police Respond To On-Campus Brawl: VIDEO

SALEM, MA — At least one person was injured in a fight involving several students and non-students at Salem State University early Friday morning. The fight broke out around 1 a.m. following a dance on the South Campus of the university.

"The injured person was attended to by police and emergency medical services. Due to the nature of the injuries, police are working to determine what exactly transpired that may have contributed to this person’s injuries," Salem State University Police Chief Gene Labonte said in a note to the campus community Friday. "There may be an enhanced police presence at South Campus as investigators attempt to gather additional information related to the incident.

Nicole Giambusso, a spokesperson for Salem State, said the university could not comment further because the incident remains under investigation by university, Salem and Massachusetts State Police.

A mobile phone video posted and widely circulated on Instagram Friday morning shows a portion of the fight. It's not clear whether the people shown fighting in the video are Salem State University students.

Labonte's note did not say whether anyone was arrested, but the video shows police officers trying to break up the fight and arresting at least two people. Another portion of the video shows two people attending to a man who appeared to have been seriously injured in the brawl.
