Standoff Ends After Man Found Dead

A standoff that lasted for more than five hours on Saturday ends when the suspect is found dead.

The man at the center of a standoff on Meadow Street in Salem on Saturday was found dead in his apartment, according to Salem police.

The standoff came to an end after the body was found this afternoon. No civilians or emergency responders were injured, according to police.

It started before 8 a.m. when emergency crews were called to 13 Meadow St. where explosions were heard in the area and the first floor windows on the building were blown out. A SWAT team and bomb squad were called in as an armed man barricaded himself in his home.

It came to an end at about 1 p.m. Mayor Kimberley Driscoll said the roads in the area were returning to normal. Residents that were evacuated were allowed to return home too.

At about 1:40 p.m., Salem Police Department announced it had “secured the house” on Meadow St. and said the situation was under control.

“It is now safe to travel in the area, traffic is being reopened and those sheltering in surrounding houses may end shelter in place,” police said in the announcement.
