State Senator From Salem Backs Markey

SALEM, MA — A prominent, North Shore Democrat is backing Sen. Edward Markey in his primary race against Rep. Joe Kennedy. State Sen. Joan Lovely (D-Salem) formally endorsed Markey Monday, saying he has shown a commitment to the constituents in her district, which includes Beverly, Danvers, Peabody, and Topsfield.

"Senator Markey's commitment to the people of the Second Essex District is demonstrated by his responsiveness at the federal level to issues that matter to his constituents every day," Lovely said. "Recently, Senator Markey joined us for a Town Hall meeting in Lynn to address one of the greatest challenges we are facing: climate change. He discussed his concrete plans and policy proposals, including the Green New Deal, that will make a difference for the Commonwealth. Senator Markey is committed to doing the hard work, and I am proud to support him for re-election."

Kennedy, 38, is the grandson of Robert Kennedy and grand-nephew of John F. Kennedy. He is the last of the famed Bay State political family serving in Washington. He's also been a fast-rising star in the Democratic ranks, chosen give the party's response to President Trump's State of the Union address in 2018.

Markey, 73, is popular among high-profile Democrats, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the latter of whom he partnered with to introduce the Green New Deal. Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Markey last week.

Markey is already facing Shannon Liss-Riordan and Steve Pemberton in the primary.
