Store Employee Bitten By Squirrel

The following information was provided by the Salem Police Department. When charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police log:

Friday, Oct. 14

  • A resident of Circle Hill Road reported an American flag was stolen from the front of his house at 12:13 a.m.
  • At 1:33 a.m. police responded to a rollover crash on Derby Street. According to police, a person driving in excess of the speed limit, side-swiped six vehicles before rolling the car onto its side. The driver was issued a summons for driving to endanger and driving at speeds greater than reasonable or proper.
  • At 9:40 a.m. police responded to a car accident on Highland Avenue. A truck driver, driving the wrong way on a section of the road, drove over the island and tore a Do Not Enter sign out of the ground. The driver was issued a citation.
  • At 12:40 p.m. police and fire responded to a vehicle on fire on the James Ayube Bypass Road. Two vehicle had been in an accident and one of the vehicles ignited. One driver was issued a citation for following too closely. No one was injured.
  • At 1:55 p.m. a vehicle hit a house on Essex Street. The damage to the house was minor.
  • At 2:19 p.m. a man was reported to be screaming on the beach along Essex Street.
  • At 5:15 p.m. a juvenile was arrested on Mason Street.
  • At 6:29 p.m. police received a call from a woman who was locked in a public storage area on Goodhue Street. The woman called back to say her husband was on the way and would let her out.
  • At 8:47 p.m. police removed people from a condemned residence on Summit Street.

Saturday, Oct. 15

  • At 12:10 a.m. police responded to a report of two men fighting on Essex Street.
  • At 12:58 a.m. police responded to a Derby Street bar for a fight. When police arrived they saw a man on the ground and two other men stomping on him. Two people were arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (shod foot) and disorderly conduct. One of the men was additionally charged with simple assault and battery. The names of the individuals were not immediately available.
  • At 3:26 a.m. police shut down a loud party on Jefferson Avenue. The host was issued a citation for violating the city noise ordinance.
  • At 9:22 a.m. police responded to Front Street for a report of a man dressed in black, carrying an axe. Police spoke to the man who said he was involved in a production taking place at Old Town Hall. The axe was plastic.
  • A car was reported to have been broken into on Pope Street overnight.
  • At 10:29 a.m. police helped secure a tent that was blowing into the street on Derby Street.
  • At 11:37 a.m. police responded to for a report a squirrel had bitten an employee. The employee was bit on the finger as she  tried to remove the squirrel from her business. The squirrel was removed from the store and apprehended for testing. The woman did seek medical attention.
  • At 1:25 p.m. a resident of Federal Street reported their vehicle was broken into overnight.
  • At 2:43 p.m. police received a report of a person preaching on Essex Street. Police observed the man and said he was not being loud or abusive.

The following people were arrested over the weekend:

  • Prudencio Claudio, 43, 58 Summer St., Winthrop, was arrested Friday on charges of violating a protection order.
  • Frank J. Reynolds, 41, 116 Lafayette St., was arrested Friday on a warrant.
  • Naman Joseph Spencer, 34, 166 Alley St., Lynn, was arrested Friday and charged with shoplifting by concealing merchandise.
