UPDATE: Arrest Made in Attempted Murder of Salem Police Officer

Jeremiah Wooden was arrested in Lynn on Friday afternoon.

Salem, MA - The 22-year-old Malden man wanted for the attempted murder of a Salem police officer was arrested in Lynn on Friday afternoon, according to Salem police.

Friday, at approximately 3:15 pm, Jeremiah F. Wooden, the suspect in the attempted murder of a Salem police officer on Thursday night, April 14, was arrested, without incident, on Park Street in Lynn by Salem Police detectives, Lynn police Officers, and the Massachusetts State Police Fugitive Apprehension Unit. The arrest of Wooden occurred after detectives and State followed several leads to Lynn.

After being booked at the Salem Police Headquarters, Wooden was transported to the Essex County Correctional Facility pending arraignment in Salem District Court on Tuesday, April 19 for the following charges:

  • Armed Assault with intent to Murder
  • Assault and Battery on a Police Officer
  • Attempted Assault and Battery with a Firearm
  • Possession of a Firearm during a Felony
  • Discharging a Firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling
  • Disorderly Conduct
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Operating after License suspended, subsequent offense
  • Assault by Dangerous Weapon


"This is another outstanding effort by our police department working together with the Mass State Police, Boston Police, Malden Police, Lynn Police, and Salem State University Police, who used tremendous skills and experience in tracking down the suspect," said Salem Police Chief Mary Butler. "Valuable information from our community, once again, provided us the opportunity to remove now two violent criminals from our city streets."

Wooden allegedly shot at Salem officers while they were attempting to arrest him for warrants on Fairfield Street shortly after 6 p.m. on Thursday.

During a foot chase and struggle, Wooden pulled out a gun and fired a shot at the officers, who were not hit or injured.

Wooden then fled on foot. The area around Fairfield and Lafayette Streets were blocked off for several hours on Thursday evening as state, local, and canine units searched for the suspect, but he was not found immediately.

On Friday morning, Salem Police issued the wanted poster for Wooden. It also listed three known associates/girlfriends: Kandis Moore of Marblehead, Amber Lebaron of Lynn, and Kaileigh McNeil of East Boston.
