Which Road in Salem Needs a Speed Bump?

Salem, MA- Over 9,000 fatalities occurred nationally during 2014 due to speeding according to the latest statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The data also shows a correlation between a driver’s age and the likelihood of a speed-related accident. As the age of a driver increases, their risk of being in an accident decreases. Men are also more likely to be at the wheel during a speeding accident, according to the study.

While the number of speed-related fatalities have continually decreased since 2005, speeding still remains an issue in many of our Patch communities, including Salem. Readers suggested everything from increased police presence to more stop signs to building less housing to keep traffic at bay.

If you’re frustrated with speeders in a certain part of Salem, you are in good company. We reached out to readers on Facebook, asking which local road they thought needed a speed bump. Here’s what your neighbors told us:

• " Liberty Hill Ave. All the way down to the bridge. We fish off the Kernwood and my kids go to Bates, people do 50 mph down there!"
• "Essex St/Highland Ave"
• "Norman Street at the DD crosswalk, even if it's just to slow drivers down enough to look up from their texting (because yes, there's plenty if THOSE drivers around) and realize pedestrians have right of way."
• "GREEN STREET! Towards Eden and Messervy. Too many kids and it's a cut-through. People drive way too fast for such a little street!"
• "Flint street between Mason and Bridge Street!"

• "Webb Street at Allen. Many people taking the left from Derby think the straight road is a drag strip!
• "Summit Street from Butler to Witch Way. It's like a drag strip. I can't tell you how many times I've almost got hit coming out of my driveway."
• "Hanson Street. They use this street for a speedway, I keep saying that someone is going to get killed on this street."
• "Flint Street between Mason and Bridge Street!"
• "Marlborough Road. Also known as Rt. 128a. People fly."
