Teen Assaulted on City Street

The following information was provided by the Salem Police Department. When charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police log:

Friday, Oct. 21

  • At 12:45 a.m. police responded to the for a noise complaint. When police arrived, the band was packing up but 8-10 patrons were inside and some had alcoholic beverages at their table or at the bar. The owner was advised to clear the restaurant and reminded of the laws regarding alcohol sales.
  • At 12:54 a.m. police responded to Washington Street for a disturbance. When police arrived they found a taxi driver bleeding from the nose. The driver told police he was sitting in the passenger seat of his taxi when three men approached, looking for a ride. The group had an argument which ended in the three men punching the driver when he got out of the taxi. The three men fled down Derby Street. Police caught one of the men and advised the driver he can pursue the matter in district court.
  • At 1:17 a.m. a vehicle crashed into a telephone pole at the corner of Mason and Buffum streets.
  • At 2:41 a.m. police were in the area of Loring Avenue when they heard a loud crash. The crash turned out to be a motorcycle down on Loring Avenue. The man was not injured and was able to ride his bike home.
  • At 7:43 a.m. police responded to Hayes Road for a neighborhood dispute. One neighbor was upset about another Hayes Road resident allowing his dog to run free and defecate on his lawn. The man took the feces and threw it on the other man's house. When police talked to the man with the dog who had feces thrown on his house, he told police it was not a big deal and he just washed it off. Police advised the men to stay away from eachother.
  • At 8:31 a.m. an employee of reported a truck in the parking lot each morning as the bank was opened. The employee gave police the plate number. Police called the vehicle's owner, a Salem resident, and found the resident was just drinking morning coffee and talking on the phone there. The resident was advised to do so elsewhere.
  • Stolen pumpkins were reported on Hancock Street at 9:30 a.m.
  • At 6 p.m. police responded to Washington Street. Upon arrival, they found a hysterical woman unable to talk to them about what was wrong. Police transported the woman to the hospital and went back to interview her later. The woman later told police she was asleep in her bed when she heard a noise in the kitchen. The woman has two cats so she believed they had gotten into something. When the woman opened her eyes, she saw her neighbor standing in the doorway and then the woman began to attack her with a pair of scissors. A scuffle ensued and the woman sustained several scratches and a cut to her lip. Police arrested the neighbor,
  • At 8:23 p.m. two men went to the police station to report an incident of road rage. The men said they were on Jackson Street, attempting to parallel park when a blue car began to follow them. The car followed them throughout the city and at a stop light, the driver got out and pointed what they believed was a shotgun at them. The men drove to the police station and lost the car. The man was described as in his 30's or 40's and wearing a fleece vest.

  • At 12:41 a.m. a man was placed into protective custody after being thrown out of
  • At 12:41 a.m. police and fire reponded to Essex Street for a stove fire. The fire was out when personnel arrived. The fire department ventilated the area.
  • At 1:07 a.m. police responded to a loud party on West Avenue. Loud music and yelling could be heard outside the residence. After three minutes of knocking on the door, a man came out and pushed a police officer and told him not to go in.
  • At 1:09 a.m. police cleared a fight on Lafayette Street.
  • At 1:44 a.m. police responded to a fight at Bridge and Beacon streets. The initial report said it was a large fight with possible weapons being used. When police arrived, several people ran away and no one was willing to talk about what they saw.
  • At 11:51 a.m. hypodermic needles were found on Fort Avenue.
  • At 1:20 p.m. an elderly woman with dementia was reported missing. 20 minutes later, she was found at home.
  • At 2:12 p.m a box of kid-themed VHS and DVDs was found at the small park at the corner of Buffum and School streets.
  • At 6:32 p.m. police were called to Essex Street for a person smoking marijuana. The person was issued a citation.
  • At 6:47 p.m. police were called to Murphy's for a party being detained by bystanders. Police were met with the victim and her family. The victim told police she was grabbed in the crotch by the man, on Essex Street. The victim's father than chased the man along Essex Street and to Murphy's Bar. According to police, unnamed pedestrians stopped the man as the father screamed to stop the man.
  • At 7:57 p.m. an alarm sounded at . When police arrived, they found the door ajar. Police found a man inside the store, attempting to lift a bike off a rack, police said. Police called for backup and ordered the man to drop to the ground. The man, dropped the bike and proceeded toward the officer. The officer drew his weapon, according to police reports, and ordered him to the ground several times. The man continued to pace back and forth and tried to walk past the officer. The officer would push the man back with his free hand each time. The man then tried to walk away toward the back of the store. The officer secured his weapon, grabbed the man by the back of the shirt and threw him to the ground. The man continued to struggle with the officer while the officer waited for backup. An off-duty police officer from Chicopee was walking by the store when he saw the officer and suspect struggling inside. The off-duty officer identified himself and helped the officer hold the suspect on the ground and handcuff him.
  • At 9:28 p.m. police were called to Washington Street for a fight in the street. Two men were punching eachother. Another man treated for injuries.

Sunday, Oct. 23

  • At 12:03 a.m. police were called to Roslyn Street for a break-in. The home owner said she was in bed when she saw a flashlight in the hallway. She called out and the flashlight was gone. She waited 45 minutes before calling police, according to the police report. When police arrived, they found a kitchen screen cut and her purse missing.
  • At 12:30 a.m. a resident of Derby Street reported their apartment had been broken into and an Xbox and eight video games were taken.
  • At 10:08 a.m. police checked a raccoon on Boston Street.
  • At 11:18 a.m. a man told police he was leaving when he heard an "extremely loud car horn" and that he was having difficulty since then, hearing out of his right ear.
  • At 2:31 p.m. police responded to Franklin Street for a report of kids on the gazebo roof. There were no kids there when police arrived.
